APRIL 7-13: Lift Up Your Voices… to Declare My Gospel

Come Follow Me Doctrine and Covenants 30-36

Some of you may know what it’s like to be ‘called to a mission’. Many might think of a mission as a service we give for a couple of years. Others may understand a mission as a lifelong pursuit.

I read in a book years ago that it’s helpful in a marriage to understand and be supportive of your spouse’s mission. Since then I’ve not only tried to identify what I see as a mission of my husband, but also what my mission or missions in this life might be. One of those missions, I think for both of us, is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ wherever we may be asked.

In the late 1800’s Mary Brown wrote a song that has been popular with Christians ever since. While Mary was of the Baptist faith, her song has been mistaken as of Latter-Day Saint origin due to its missionary focus. All fellow Christians share in the mission of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. I enjoy conversations with those of many faiths and finding the commonalities we have.

I’ll Go Where You Want Me to Go – Bekah Sorensen

One friend, ‘C’, introduced me to this song of Katy Nicole. ‘C’ told me this song helped him through many hard times, letting him know that he is not alone; he has someone in his corner in all his difficulties.

Some friends find connection to God through eastern practices of meditation and yoga. ‘J’ is convinced he can teach even me how to meditate, which would be a good thing. He has introduced me to Jaya Lakshmi songs. One thing I’ve noticed is that meditation songs are generally two to three times longer than other songs – and yes, are repetitive, although enjoyable. Something I must learn is how to be still, be present in the minutia of the moment – separate from linear time.

‘J’ teaches me that ‘Jaya’ means victory or triumph. In Hinduism, ‘Lakshmi’ is the goddess of wealth, prosperity, good fortune, and beauty, and is the wife of Vishnu – also associated with good fortune. This is quite a name this artist has adopted.

In the song Servants of Love is repeated the phrase, ‘Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram’, ‘Sri’: resplendent, glorious, revered. ‘Ram’: Lord as Light, Strength, Virtue. Jai: Praise, Victory. What can I add but ‘Amen’ and ‘Thank You’ as I think of my Lord.

‘R’ would often share songs heard from Youth Music Festivals. A couple of apps you may want to download if you don’t already have them is the Gospel Library (logo is blue background with Christ in an arched doorway) and Sacred Music (green background with white music note). Both apps are from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Gospel Library includes scriptures (KJV) and other related church materials. But I want to draw attention to the Music folder (again the green background with white music note). The Sacred Music app has more music than found on the Library app.

In both you will find ‘Youth and Contemporary’ Music. This includes twelve years of Youth Albums, Music Festival recordings – in several languages – and more. This is contemporary music that you can listen to all day! Try it and see how it lifts your outlook, and how you feel the love of our Savior. As addictions go, you will discover a good one in wanting more of this music.

Here’s an introductory listen for you, and the Bonner’s are the right ambassadors to share their love of Christ.

Peace in Christ – Yahosh & Oba Bonner/YMF 2020

Speak up. Sing up. Use ‘Your’ voice in whatever is your medium! Never shy away from giving praise to our Lord, our God.

Thank you to all the artists whose songs share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and fill my life with joy.
