Come Follow Me, Moroni 7-9
Do not despair. Yes, darkness and pain are in and surround us, but so is light and the energy to give. But we actually live in a pretty great world where people are doing pretty great things – so let’s pay attention and contribute to that! To quote the Come Follow Me manual, “Hope does not mean ignoring or being naïve about the world’s problems. Hope means having faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, whose power is greater and more everlasting than these problems.” Hope is in Christ, our Redeemer, whose birth we celebrate this season.

Hope is also held our own hands, with power to make a difference in our world, however small our corner of it may be. I taught my grandchildren recently that hope isn’t just a wish; hope is the promise of things to come. We plant a seed, we water and nourish the soil with the hope- the promise- the seed will sprout and grow into a tree, a tomato, a flower. What we add to receive that promise is relatively small, yet essential.
Do Something- Matthew West
To do something. That feels overwhelming. Do some thing. Not everything. Not something that’s extraordinary by itself. Just some thing. We can each do that. Times it by how many billion of us there are… that’s a lot of some things! Our some thing makes a difference, if even to ourselves.

I have seen it over and over- a group of young women who have reached the summit of a strenuous climb, pulling and pushing a heavy cart. Almost before they catch their breath, they drop their load, turn around and run back down the hill to aid others on the climb. Having been a recipient of that aid- that some thing mattered. It matters still, because that is the type of person these youth have each become. One who helps without having to be asked. To Help might equal To Love.
I’ve already told you how I love Les Mis. Here in the finale we hear, “To love another person is to see the face of God.” Will you join in our crusade?

To be lifted is then to turn and lift another. Because that’s who we become, and whose we’ve become.
