JANUARY 13-19: I Saw a Pillar of Light

Come Follow Me Joseph Smith History 1:1-26

I had a recent conversation with a man who, while willing to offer the prayer for a group in a religious setting, was also hesitant because his beliefs and his prayers were different than many in the group. “But who are we each trying to connect with in prayer?” we discussed. We agreed that while our beliefs may be different, our prayers to a holy being align in our reaching toward a loving creator. To be like them we strive to love and serve our fellowman, brothers and sisters in this earthly life. All our sincere prayers are welcome! Seeking enlightenment, to increase toward perfection as best we are able.

Prayer is very personal, even if called to pray five times daily. We bow low in reverential worship or hold heads and hands high to receive blessings, singing our prayers and praises aloud. We call out in panic for immediate help. I like the Phillipe Gaston method (Matthew Broderick’s character in Ladyhawke): in constant conversation with God.

There’s a story of a young man in South Africa who had been taught the power of prayer. For his job he delivered supplies back and forth across the country, riding long stretches of lonely road on a small scooter. One day on his ride his scooter stopped working. Not able to fix it, and far from any town, he did what he could – he prayed for his scooter to start up again. And it did!

A few miles down the road his scooter again stopped. Again he prayed and the scooter started back up again. Now he believed the scooter would only work as he was praying, and the thought came, “I can sing my prayer.” For hours he sang songs of prayer for the scooter and the scooter continued with him. Just outside a village where mechanical help could be found, his hoarse voice gave out, and so did the scooter.

My Little Prayer- David Archuleta

“Learning to be patient . . . answers [are] not always immediate”, David sings in this prayer. “. . . for me you have a plan.”

As we wait for guidance, Casting Crowns invites us to “just be held”. What a beautiful reminder.

Just Be Held- Casting Crowns

Grant Lemon brings us close to a prayer that, according to God’s plan, was answered miraculously, to bring change to the world.

Pillar of Light- Grant Lemon

How grateful I am for a personal relationship with a Heavenly creator, and how my prayers have been answered. May we each know that our simple, personal prayers are heard. And may we all find that they are answered in a pillar of light to our hearts and minds.

Thank you to all the artists whose songs share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and fill my life with joy.
