JANUARY 20-26: The Hearts of the Children Shall Turn to Their Fathers

Come Follow Me Doctrine and Covenants 2; Joseph Smith-History 1:27-65
I love Old Testament stories … so much drama within messy families! Better than fiction. And I am continually grateful that, even in our annoying habits, my family genuinely likes and honors one another.
I have a jacket that is a weave of many different colors. When wearing it I think of Joseph: eleventh son of Jacob – first son of beloved wife Rachel. Now there’s a mess of a family! Jealousy for a younger brother so profound that the brothers unite in wanting to take away Joseph’s life. What luck that another opportunity happened along to simply sell him into slavery instead. It is evident that God had a plan for Joseph- one that would save his whole family.
As parents we can’t help but be filled with hope for our beautiful child. We sacrifice for their happiness, wanting to give them a world where they can magnify their dreams and possibilities.
In the musical Hamilton, such hopes are expressed by fathers for their children, amidst the building of a new nation.

Sara Bareilles’ love-song from the musical Waitress has layers of meaning within. As sung by this Daddy Daughter Duo, I hope the love of a parent – even a heavenly parent – resonates as you, his child, give love in return.

Now the sons of Israel seem to have had a rocky growth journey from their grand misdeed of selling their brother. They turn to protecting their family honor, even in extreme fashion on behalf of their one sister Dinah. Then they quickly defend their youngest brother Benjamin, willing to take the punishment for thievery to protect their grieving father Jacob from losing yet another of Rachel’s sons. (Genesis 37-50) I believe in their growing maturity they come to understand their father’s history, the sacrifices he gave, and the man of God he’s proven in the covenants he keeps.
In this sweet song, Lord Sycamore gives voice that as we, too, mature, so does our gratitude for our parents.

The Old Testament ends with the promise that the prophet Elijah will return to the earth, he will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers. (Malachi 4:5-6) This sounds like a family reunion to me. And it is happening now in an exploding interest and efforts for family history, and temple ordinances in behalf of those who have gone before.
And still today, as in times of old, the Jewish Passover Seder or family dinner table is set with a chair for Elijah, welcoming him to usher in the coming of the Messiah.
