This post is dedicated to all the band nerds! I Love You!
July is a month where we celebrate the forming of The United States of America. This jazzy rendition will get us into the swing of all we have to celebrate.
America The Beautiful- U.S. Navy Band
“On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country …” The oath of every Boy Scout and soldier. To be an instrument for them.
What instruments are you familiar with? Guitar? Piano? Trumpet? Flute? Cello? The list goes on and on. Do any of those instruments play themselves?
An instrument is merely a tool. No I don’t want to be a tool! Yet the master cannot achieve his purpose without an instrument. One that is well tuned.
As I’ve searched through videos to share, I am impressed by what it must take to surrender your own will to be a soldier, to follow a commander beyond your own wishes but for the betterment of all. That takes faith and trust; a belief that you alone cannot achieve the goal, but that you are a part of something greater than yourself.
I’ve always imagined the job of a soldier to be out on the battlefield defending our country, keeping fit and fight ready. But do you know that some of our greatest bands are from our armed forces. [Check out your favorites – there is much to find.] But isn’t playing in a band a frivolous use of our soldiers efforts?
In recent years I’ve come to realize that fighting isn’t the goal. Peace is. What better way to bridge our differences can there be than through a sound that offers peace, harmony, and a collective joy.
We may think we are an instrument of limited range or abilities. But not in the hands of a master.
This upcoming video is a bit longer, but a journey worth taking to appreciate the visual precision, not just the sound.

Several of us were in tears at the end of this next tribute. Sung for the 100th Veterans Day Anniversary in 2018.
Freedom Song- by the US Air Force Singing Sergeants.
Our last group is only a fraction of the size of the Tabernacle Symphony and Choir, yet they don’t lack in strength. An emblem that power doesn’t come from the number of ‘instruments’ on the field, but in the strength of the master.
The Battle Hymn of the Republic- US Army Field Band
On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty – and give thanks – to God and my country, and those who serve as instruments.
Thank you.
