July 24, 1847 pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley and made a home. They came by wagon with teams of oxen. Others would come by handcart. Either way it was a long walk full of obstacles and dangers. Like a good video game. Only with more blisters.
The Handcart Song- Tabernacle Choir
What are you carrying in your handcart? Hopefully some useful tools. How about doubt? Anger? Resentment? Regret? The list can go on and on. And can weigh much more that a toolbox of hammer, saws, nails, shovel, hoe – tools used for building and for planting. Daily we push and pull our handcart, and it can feel very heavy. So toss out the garbage. It’s not doing you any good anymore.
In remembering our pioneer heritage we geek out a bit, we dress up in pioneer clothes and go on Trek for a few days. We build floats and have a great parade. We get another day of fireworks.
And yet, pioneering is still happening. Pioneers come by train, by boat, by plane. They cross rivers and national borders and college degrees. We reinvent ourselves for a new start, with the hope for a better, safer home.
Somewhere There’s a Mountain- Nashville Tribute Band
Our road has rocky climbs, smooth stretches, rivers to cross. We might not have a choice on which path to follow, but we do have a choice on our way to follow.
The Jesus Way- Paul Wickham
We’ve been put on this journey together. Let’s be good Trek buddies- be kind, pitch in what you’ve got to help. Be patient, because we don’t know what blisters another might be walking on.
