Come Follow Me Doctrine and Covenants 20-22

A friend was recently admitting that, while she prayed often and felt a relationship with God, she never understood the need to gather together with others to worship. Even as she said this, she quoted Matthew 18:20 “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

This verse flows in my head as Claudia Bigler’s haunting song ‘Invocation’ that has become an anthem for the young Nauvoo Performing Missionaries. Here, it is sung by the extraordinary Griffin family – yes this is all one family. Thank you, Griffins, for sharing this testimony.

So why then, are we called to gather together in his name?

Something that comes to my mind is how many times my prayers are answered by others. But then, are we not among the tools that God has to work with?

The Servant Song – Servant of the Lion

Justin Gambino gently reminds that as we know the Lord is continually close, we continually renew our resolve to turn that love towards others, as we are called upon to act as his hands and feet.

Your Hands & Feet – Justin Gambino

Hold out one of your fingers. Take a look at it. You can do a lot with that finger. You can exit out of this blog. Or subscribe;) With some practice you can paint a masterpiece. Now when you join this finger with others, what then can you accomplish?

As we consider this, I want to introduce you to Jude Kofie, an amazing 11-year-old who knows how to use his fingers.

Did you notice the other fingers that contribute to this story? The one who gave young Jude the example of what sounds could be made, someone to mimic. And the one who has invested his inheritance to help Jude’s talent grow. That is community.

Remember five years ago when the world shut down due to Covid? Wow, we have come far since then. One thing that experience taught us is that through the miracle of technology our community is connected worldwide. In some ways we are more connected to those that live across the globe than we are to those that live across the street. What can our fingers, or hands and feet do to balance that? Like, right now. I’ll wait ……

It’s true that there are many who make this world ugly and painful and put their efforts toward causing division amongst us. But there are a great many more who pull our efforts to unite us – to gather us together in His name. Whatever name we may use, they all mean the one who Loves.

Amazing Grace – 50 Countries Unite

May we, brothers and sisters, find community with people of Love and cling to them! And Be them. May we find success and abundant joy in our uniting efforts – in His name.

Thank you to all the artists whose songs share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and fill my life with joy.
