Come Follow Me Doctrine and Covenants 23–26

Luke 10: 38-42 [NIV] 38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[a] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

The Better Thing – Eliza King

On March 17, 1842 the Relief Society was organized by leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Initially, women of proven integrity were invited to join. They would offer relief to those in needy circumstances, and those donating their efforts to build temples. It quickly became an organization for all women of the church, united in sisterhood.

We continue today under the motto ‘Charity Never Faileth’. In the original mission to offer relief both temporally and spiritually to those in need we are now the largest organization of women and span worldwide. Through the month of March groups of ‘sisters’ will gather in celebration of our founding. I am proud to be part of this noble sisterhood.

As Sisters in Zion

This song ‘As Sisters in Zion’ came from a poem written by Emily Hall (Woodmansee), a young woman who joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as a young 16-year-old in England. She immigrated to the United States with her sister to join with the church that was then in the process of the overland migration into the Salt Lake valley and beyond. You can hear about Emily’s story in this video. Learning Emily’s history is not only insightful, but also resonates with my own family history stories.

This beautiful song by Martina McBride is just one illustration of our mission as children of god, to hear Gods’ call as sisters and brothers to humanity.

God’s Will – Martina McBride

As we find the better part, those negative thoughts that haunt us can be erased. We are a child of loving Heavenly Parents. As someone once said “God don’t make no junk.”

Knowing we ARE something better gives us added strength to DO something better.

Something Better – Blanca w/ Tauren Wells

This promise to Emma Hale Smith is for us all: ” … Lay aside the things of this world, and seek for the things of a better, and it shall be given thee.” Doctrine and Covenants 25:10-11

Thank you to all the artists whose songs share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and fill my life with joy.
